What is GMO Food?

So much of the food we eat has been corrupted by GMOs.

What exactly is a GMO food, and what does “GMO” mean? GMO stands for Genetically modified Organism, and it is a plant or a meat product that has had its deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) unnaturally altered in a laboratory by genes from different plants, animals, viruses, or bacteria, in order to provide foreign compounds in that food. This type of alteration is experimental and is not found in nature.

Unlike the strict safety evaluations supposedly needed for the approval of the latest drugs (keep in mind those “safe” drugs are shown time and again to have side effects years later that vary from pesky to causing death), the protection of genetically built foods for human consumption has not been adequately tested. In fact, to date there haven’t been any long-term studies done to determine the safety of ingesting genetically engineered foods.

The United States and Canada do NOT require labeling of genetically modified foods while 50 countries have significant restrictions or bans on GMOs. These countries include India, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Mexico.

You can be sold a GM (Genetically Modified) food without being told that is what you are shopping for as long as it isn’t too totally different in chemical composition from foods already on the market. Doesn’t it seem odd that they don’t tell you whether the food you’re buying is genetically modified? Pros & Cons of GMO?

Due to the concerns from both advocates and opponents, both sides of the debate have come together over the past couple of years in forums and summits all over the world to discuss the issue. 9 Methods to Avoid GMO Foods

  • Soybeans – Products made from soybeans include soy flour, soy isolates, soy lecithin, soy protein, and isoflavones. Be sure that soy-based products such as tofu, soy milk, edamame, and such have a label stating it is organic to be sure it isn’t genetically modified.
  • Canola or rapeseed – Made from the rapeseed plant, oil nearly actually comes from genetically engineered crops, unless you’re placed in the EU, where no genetically modified crops of rapeseed are yet grown. You find it used mostly as cooking oil and in margarine, and though it is high in monounsaturated fat, it is not a healthy oil to use regularly due to its high levels of omega-6 fatty acids and since it goes rancid simply once heated. Olive oil is a better choice.

  • A 5-digit range starting with a nine indicates it’s organic, and therefore a non-GM food.

7. Buy 100% fruit juices – Though most fruit juices aren’t derived from GM foods, the sweetener used in several of those juices (and sodas as well) is high laevulose corn syrup, which is almost certainly from genetically modified corn.

8. Buy meat that is 100% grass-fed Most cattle in the U.S. are grass-fed until the last three to four months of their lives. At now, they’re sometimes shipped to feedlots wherever they’ll be given genetically modified corn and alternative genetically changed foods in order to extend the number of “marbling” Meat from these feedlot animals has higher levels of saturated fat and fewer of the healthy omega 3 fatty acids than grass-fed and grass-finished animals.

Wild-caught fish are better than farm-raised, as farm-raised fish are fed fish meal containing GM grains and sometimes meat and bone meal. Eggs should be labeled 100% organic, as those with only a “free-range,” “natural,” or “cage-free” label is not necessarily free of GMOs.

9. Purchase your meat and produce at local farmers’ markets – Most genetically changed food is grownup on large industrial farms. The farmers’ market permits you to talk directly with the farmer to find out how the food was grownup.
